Awari is a Beninese food brand that preserves grandmother's cooking in a jar. Their O'dja sauce line comes in five authentic West African recipes , Nature, Viande, Escargot, Wagashi, and Lanhouin , each crafted from fresh Beninese tomatoes, cooked over wood fire with no preservatives. The e-commerce platform sells across Benin, Togo, France, Canada, and the USA, while supporting over 50 women farmers in the local tomato supply chain.
50% of Benin's tomato harvest, out of a 279,466-tonne annual production, is lost every year due to lack of processing. At the same time, West African diaspora families across Europe and North America had no way to access the authentic taste of home-cooked African sauces. Two problems, one untapped opportunity.
Awari converts perishable surplus tomatoes into shelf-stable artisanal sauces using traditional wood-fire cooking methods. The e-commerce platform reaches diaspora customers in five countries and tells the full story behind each recipe, from the Beninese farmer to the jar. Every sale directly supports women in the tomato supply chain and reduces post-harvest loss.
